چکیده

The present study examined whether social motivational influence from working with a Teachable Agent (TA) might transfer from the formative learning phase to a summative test situation. Forty-nine students (9-10 years old) performed a digital pretest of math skills, then played a TA-based educational math game in school over a period of seven weeks. Thereafter, the students were divided into two groups matched according to their pretest scores, and randomly assigned one of two posttest conditions: either with the TA present, or without the TA. Results showed that low-performers on the pretest improved dramatically on the posttest when tested with the TA, whereas highperformers did not. We reason that low-performers might be more susceptible to a supportive social context – as provided by their TA – for performing well in a test situation. Ratings of fun, effort and confidence in taking the test pointed to a complexity of effects for future research.

Endophytes: Toward a Vision in Synthesis of Nanoparticle for Future Therapeutic Agents

The development of reliable processes for the synthesis of Nanoparticles is an important aspect of nanotechnology. Biologically synthesized nanoparticles could have innumerable applications in different areas such as reception, catalyzers, biolabellers, etc. In the present review, we emphasize the richness of the microbial world which encompasses a plethora of endophytic entities as an emerging...

Learning-by-Teaching: Designing Teachable Agents with Intrinsic Motivation

Teachable agent is a type of pedagogical agent which instantiates Learning-by-Teaching theory through simulating a “naive” learner in order to motivate students to teach it. This paper discusses the limitation of existing teachable agents and incorporates intrinsic motivation to the agent model to enable teachable agents with initiative behaviors in fulfilling three perspectives of educational ...

Embodied Teachable Agents: Learning by Teaching Robots

Robots have an untapped potential to contribute to education by acting as subordinate learners for students to teach. The benefits that the act of teaching provides for one’s own learning have long been recognized; tutoring-associated improvements in measures like achievement scores, depth of understanding, and motivation are often far greater for the tutor than the tutee. Artificial agents can...

Teachable Characters: User Studies, Design Principles, and Learning Performance

Teachable characters can enhance entertainment technology by providing new interactions, becoming more competent at game play, and simply being fun to teach. We argue that is important to understand how human players try to teach virtual agents in order to design agents that learn effectively from this instruction. We present results of an initial user study where people teach a virtual agent a...
